November 13th. Finland: By Eric Keefe FRPSL
Eric’s display began with the start of the Finish postal service in 1638, with covers from 1732 up to 1950. In the second half Eric showed Air mail and marine mail from the 1950s to the present day. After the applause from the delighted audience a Bottle of wine was presented to Eric by Michael Pit-Payne, The usual Aylesbury reward for a splendid show.
October 9th. John Baron. The financial world tonight
Members were pleased to welcome back John Baron with a new subject of “Banking”. John showed many items from his relatively new collecting interest of Banking, a career that he had pursued for much of his life.
Among the items on display were early Cheques, and covers including early correspondence from banks mainly in the U.K .but including items from around the world.
Pictured here John shows a letter recovered from a aircraft accident in Singapore.
September11th 2013- Brian Trotter
With displays of South Africa, South America and South east Asia.
We were pleased to welcome Brian to our September Meeting especially as he had returned from his trip to Tunisia at 2 a.m the same day.
Brian is one of the leading Philatelists in the U.K.and recently signed the role of distinguished Philatelists a honour shared by a limited number of chosen individuals across the world. He organised the International Exhibition “London 2010”an has just completed two years as president of the Royal Philatelic Society.
Items displayed to us were both rare and of historic importance. A most enjoyable evening.
July 10th: Ted and Shirley Kemp: Turkey and Czechoslovakia
Aylesbury Society member Graham Aylet is pictured with his Sister Shirley and her husband Ted.
Both Ted and Shirley were keen Collectors when they first met and have pursued their mutual interest in Philately throughout their married life. Ted showed his material from Turkey starting in 1840 and running through to the death of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who was the first president of Turkey.
Sheila's display of Czechoslovakia started with the series of large annual Art Issues from 1966, then featured some of the older issues running through to modern day.
April 10th 2013
Following our successful yearly country themed meetings this year was the turn of Poland. Added to the loyal members present were members of the Polish community including Shop owners who brought along tempting polish biscuits and confectionery for us to sample.
Pictured showing a display of wartime postal history from around the area of Gdansk is Giles Boulay who told of the horrendous incidents that occurred in this dark period for Poland during the Second World War.
February 13th: Rex Dixon FRPSL – German Winter Relief
Rex started at the very beginning in 1924 telling the story of the German winter relief stamps which were sold alongside regular issues but carried a surcharge which was later donated to the charity that helped the suffering of some unfortunate poor German People, Rex told of how half the donated money from the sale of these stamps went to the German Red Cross during war years.
The Charity also ran a lottery during the Nazi regime which gave away post cards to those who entered and Rex showed some of these along with Booklets sheets of stamps and Covers, some of which are featured in the accompanying Photograph. No further stamp items were sold by the charity after 1940
